Error resilience is an important aspect of design and operations in complex sociotechnical systems, especially those that involve the potential for risk to human life. Many healthcare organizations have promoted or successfully adopted human factors approaches that have been historically applied in aviation in order to improve patient safety and healthcare provider performance. However, the integration of aviation human factors approaches has not been seamless in some healthcare scenarios. Here, the authors explore prominent human factors issues in the two industries in terms of challenges and successes in conducting human factors research and in applying its best practices.
